Comrades’ Day in Calliano, Trentino, South Tyrol

The VTM—the “Vereinigung der Traditionsverbände Mitteleuropas” (Association of the Middle European Traditionel Federations)—assembled for their annual “Kameradentag” (Comrades’ Day) in Calliano, Trentino, South Tyrol.

It’s always a warm and friendly reunion between a delegation from the Noble Order and the VTM. Our relationship has lasted for over forty years and has always been amicable.

The VTM is the assembly of the old Habsburg regiments and the urban militias that maintain the tradition. It’s always a colorful spectacle with groups gathering from all over Germany, Austria, and South Tyrol. We naturally have the House of Habsburg in common, of which HRH Karl is our patron, but we also share the same concern for preserving tradition in the broadest sense.

What is always characteristic is the warm friendship that prevails across borders and the ever-joyful reunion.

On the first day, a visit was organized to the “Beseno” castle, followed by a short visit to the village of Calliano. A short commemoration, including the laying of wreaths, took place at the Emperor Karl monument.
On the second day, a march was held with all attendees through the beautiful town of Rovereto, attracting considerable attention from the residents. A beautiful ceremony was held in the packed church of the Madonna di Loreto, graced by the local choir. After the service, a march was organized to the monument for the fallen of WWI.

The annual meeting took place in Pietra Castle, after a leisurely aperitif and lunch. The most important event was the honoring of the deserving individuals, including the organizer, Major Enzo Cestari. The Noble Order, represented by its Chancellor, had the honor of promoting the secretary of the VTM, Hpt. Werner Bitterman, to Officer with a Gold Parrot.

After an extensive celebration during which ties were strengthened, farewells were said with the appointment at Antwerp 2026 for the 50th anniversary of the Order.
